Your AI does not do the math. It sends each line's quantity, cost and markup; Projul calculates the price, subtotals, tax and total the way the editor does.
Line price and markup
A line has a type (labor, material or other), a quantity and unit, a cost per unit, and a markup; price is quantity times cost plus markup. 16 hours at $45 with 40 percent markup is $1,008.00, with $720.00 kept as company cost.
Markup can be a percent of cost or a flat dollar amount per unit. "Plus 25 percent" is percent markup, "add $12 a square foot" is dollar markup; the client sees one price, and the markup is your gross profit.
Give your AI a price instead of a cost, and Projul backs into the markup, as it does when you type one. A price with no cost reports at one hundred percent margin.
Tax and discounts
Most estimates carry one tax rate for the whole document, such as "Utah sales tax". Labor and material lines are taxable by default, other lines are not, and your AI can mark any line non-taxable. Per-line estimates have your AI set the rate on each line, and each estimate keeps the tax setting it was created under, unaffected by later changes.
Note: Your AI can add a new tax rate by name and percentage, usable right away, but cannot edit or retire one, since Projul keeps signed estimates on the rate they were signed at.
Your AI can apply a discount already set up in Projul, by name, or a negative-price line otherwise; it cannot invent a discount.
The totals your AI can tell you
Ask your AI about an estimate and it reads the cost-summary figures: cost with and without markup by type, company cost, gross profit and margin, taxable amount and tax, plus projected, published, approved, invoiced and paid totals.
What is the gross margin on the current draft of the [Thompson Deck Rebuild] estimate in Projul?
How much of [Thompson Deck Rebuild] in Projul has been invoiced and how much is left to invoice?
Note: Those estimate-level totals cover approved work only and read zero until a version is approved; ask about the draft or a named change order for that document's own numbers.
If a number does not match what you see in Projul, see Why don't the numbers match what I'd get in the app?. For more on estimates, see Estimates in Projul AI Connect: A Complete Breakdown.
